Overview
Hunter is one of the strongest and most comfortable classes for leveling in WoW: Forever. With reliable ranged damage, a loyal pet, and excellent tools for controlling enemies, Hunters excel at solo questing and perform well in dungeons.
This guide focuses on Beast Mastery (21/0/0), a leveling build that improves pet damage and survivability while introducing the new Summon Hawk ability. Once you unlock Tame Beast at level 10, your pet becomes an essential part of your damage and threat management.
The basic strategy is simple: let your pet engage enemies and generate threat while you deal damage from range. If an enemy reaches you, finish it off with melee attacks or use crowd control to create distance.
Strengths
Excellent solo leveling with a pet tanking enemies.
Strong sustained ranged damage.
Good mobility and crowd control.
Flexible tools for handling difficult encounters and multiple enemies.
Effective in both solo play and group content.
Weaknesses
Requires ammunition for ranged weapons.
Pet management is essential for efficient gameplay.
Poor positioning or excessive burst damage can pull enemies away from your pet.
Managing pet health, mana, and threat becomes increasingly important as you progress.
Talents
Arms
0 (47)Fury
0 (57)Protection
0 (55)Recommended build: 21/0/0 — Beast Mastery
Beast Mastery is the recommended leveling specialization because it increases your pet's damage, improves its utility, and provides access to Summon Hawk. Your pet contributes a significant portion of your overall damage, allowing you to fight enemies while staying safely at range.
Recommended level 30 talent build
5/5 Deadly Aspects: Improves your damage.
2/2 Focused Fire: Provides an additional damage increase.
2/2 Pathfinding: Improves movement speed.
2/2 Improved Revive Pet: Reduces the cost and cast time of Revive Pet.
5/5 Unleashed Fury: Increases pet damage and also benefits summoned Hawks.
1/1 Bestial Swiftness: Increases your pet's movement speed.
1/1 Summon Hawk: Deals damage and summons a Hawk to attack your target.
2/5 Ferocity: Improves the damage potential of your pet and Hawks.
1/1 Intimidation: Gives your pet a powerful attack that helps generate threat.
Talent priorities
Prioritize talents that improve your damage and your pet's effectiveness. Unleashed Fury is particularly valuable because it benefits both your tamed pet and your summoned Hawks.
Pathfinding also makes a noticeable difference while leveling, helping you travel between objectives faster.
Summon Hawk adds another damage source, but its shared cooldown with Arcane Shot means you should choose between them based on the encounter.
*Note: This is a level 30 beta build. Talent effects and values may change as WoW: Forever receives balance updates.*
Gameplay and Main Abilities
Hunter gameplay revolves around positioning, ranged attacks, and pet management. Your pet should generally engage enemies first, allowing you to attack without immediately drawing their attention.
Levels 1–9: Before Tame Beast
Before level 10, you must rely on your ranged attacks and melee abilities without a permanent combat pet.
Your main abilities include:
Auto Shot: Your primary source of sustained ranged damage.
Arcane Shot: Deals direct damage at the cost of mana.
Serpent Sting: Applies damage over time.
Raptor Strike: Enhances your next melee attack.
Hunter's Mark: Helps your attacks against the marked target.
Keep your distance and use Auto Shot whenever possible. If enemies reach you, use melee attacks or movement to regain a safe shooting position.
Levels 10–19: Tame Beast and Pet Leveling
At level 10, you unlock Tame Beast and gain access to one of Hunter's most important tools.
Your pet should now engage enemies first while you attack from range.
Key abilities and mechanics include:
Tame Beast: Allows you to tame a permanent pet.
Pet Attack: Sends your pet to engage your target.
Growl: Helps your pet maintain threat, where available.
Concussive Shot: Slows enemies so you can maintain distance.
Wing Clip: Helps slow enemies that reach melee range.
Freezing Trap: Provides crowd control when enemies get too close.
Boars are a good early choice because their Charge ability helps them reach enemies quickly and establish threat. They are also relatively easy to feed.
As you explore more zones, consider taming a Tallstrider. Its Dust Cloud ability provides armor-reduction utility that can complement your physical damage.
Levels 20–30: Stronger Ranged Damage
As you progress, you gain access to more powerful ranged abilities and Beast Mastery talents.
Important abilities include:
Aimed Shot: A powerful ranged attack available at level 20 in WoW: Forever.
Multi-Shot: Deals damage to multiple targets.
Summon Hawk: Deals damage and summons a Hawk to attack your current target.
Rapid Fire: Provides a powerful offensive boost.
Intimidation: Available at level 30 with the recommended talent build; helps your pet generate additional threat.
Keep your pet healthy, maintain your distance, and avoid opening with every damage cooldown at once. Let your pet establish threat before committing to your strongest attacks.
Major Changes
WoW: Forever introduces several Hunter changes compared with traditional Classic gameplay.
1. Summon Hawk
Summon Hawk is a new Beast Mastery talent that deals instant damage and summons a Hawk to attack your current target for a limited duration. You can have up to two Hawks active at once.
The ability shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot, so using one prevents you from using the other during that cooldown. This makes choosing the right ability an important part of your rotation.
2. Aimed Shot is available earlier
Aimed Shot is a baseline ability at level 20 in WoW: Forever, making it available much earlier than many Classic players may expect.
Aimed Shot shares a cooldown with Multi-Shot, so you need to choose between single-target burst and multi-target damage.
3. Pet families have unique abilities
Different pet families provide different utility and combat abilities. Choosing a pet is no longer just about appearance or basic damage.
For example, Boars are useful for engaging enemies, while Tallstriders offer Dust Cloud. Consider both your leveling needs and the abilities available to each family.
4. Pet damage and talent interactions have changed
Unleashed Fury has been updated to increase the damage of both your tamed pet and summoned Hawks. Pet scaling and several other talent interactions have also been adjusted.
These changes make Beast Mastery particularly attractive for leveling.
5. Auto Shot requires proper positioning
In the current beta, Auto Shot fires only after you have remained stationary for 0.5 seconds. Constantly moving can therefore interrupt your ranged damage.
Move between shots when kiting, then stop long enough to resume firing.
6. Traps can be used in combat
Hunter traps can now be used during combat, although their cooldowns are longer than in the original Classic implementation. Fire and Frost traps also have separate cooldowns.
Use traps to control dangerous enemies, create space, or contribute additional damage when appropriate.
*Beta note: These changes reflect the October 2026 beta information available when this guide was revised. Some mechanics and values may change before release.*
Rotation
Hunter's rotation is based on keeping your pet active, maintaining ranged damage, and choosing abilities according to the target's remaining health and the number of enemies.
General single-target rotation
1. Apply Hunter's Mark when appropriate.
2. Send your pet to attack the target.
3. Begin using Auto Shot once your pet has established threat.
4. Apply Serpent Sting if the enemy will live long enough for the damage over time to be worthwhile.
5. Use Aimed Shot for additional damage when available.
6. Use Summon Hawk when its damage and additional attacker are more valuable than Arcane Shot.
7. Continue Auto Shot while your pet deals damage.
8. Use Arcane Shot when appropriate and available, accounting for its shared cooldown with Summon Hawk.
9. If the enemy reaches you, use Wing Clip or Concussive Shot when appropriate, then reposition.
Avoid spending mana on unnecessary abilities when Auto Shot and your pet can finish the enemy efficiently.
Using Summon Hawk
Summon Hawk is especially useful against enemies that will survive long enough for the summoned Hawks to contribute meaningful damage.
Use it early enough to benefit from the Hawks' attack duration.
Use it again when available if the target is still alive and another summon is worthwhile.
Remember that it shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot.
If an enemy is nearly dead, it may be more efficient to continue Auto Shot rather than spend mana on an additional ability.
Multi-target rotation
When fighting multiple enemies:
1. Let your pet engage the main target.
2. Apply Hunter's Mark to your priority target when useful.
3. Allow your pet to establish threat before using Multi-Shot.
4. Use Multi-Shot when multiple enemies will benefit from the damage.
5. Use Freezing Trap or other crowd-control tools if enemies overwhelm you.
6. Reposition whenever enemies get too close.
Multi-Shot can quickly draw threat from several targets, so avoid using it too early when your pet or tank has not established control.
When you pull threat
If an enemy starts attacking you instead of your pet:
1. Use Concussive Shot or Wing Clip to slow it when appropriate.
2. Move away to create distance.
3. Stop briefly to allow Auto Shot to fire.
4. Use melee attacks and Raptor Strike if the enemy reaches you and cannot be safely kited.
5. Let your pet regain threat when possible.
Races
WoW: Forever expands the available Hunter race combinations. Alliance Hunters can choose Dwarf, Human, Night Elf, or Skyborne, while Horde Hunters can choose Orc, Tauren, Troll, or Skyborne.
The best choice depends on whether you prioritize offensive bonuses, survivability, or leveling convenience.
Alliance
Dwarf
Dwarf is an excellent leveling option thanks to its combination of offensive and defensive racial abilities.
Mace Specialization: Provides a critical strike bonus when using a mace, according to the current beta racial implementation.
Stoneform: Provides defensive utility, including physical damage reduction.
Big Game Hunter: Increases damage against beasts, which are common enemies during early leveling.
Dwarf is a strong all-around choice for players who want useful bonuses across a variety of encounters.
Night Elf
Night Elf offers strong offensive potential and useful mobility.
Elune's Light: Increases critical strike chance for a limited duration.
Quickness: Provides defensive benefits and increased movement speed.
Shadowmeld: Offers additional utility in suitable situations.
Wisp Spirit: Increases movement speed after death, helping you return to your corpse faster.
Night Elf is a good option if you value mobility, survivability, and burst damage.
Horde
Troll
Troll is a particularly attractive choice for leveling.
Berserking: Increases attack speed for a limited duration.
Beast damage bonus: Provides increased damage against beasts.
Regeneration: Allows a portion of health regeneration to continue during combat.
Rapid Regeneration: Provides additional health recovery under the current beta racial implementation.
These benefits make Troll a strong choice for sustained leveling, especially when fighting beast-type enemies.
Orc
Orc is another option worth considering if you prefer a combat-focused character. Check the current beta racial tooltips when comparing its offensive and pet-related benefits with those of Troll.
Skyborne
Skyborne is available to both factions and provides its own racial utility. Review the faction-specific racial abilities before choosing it over Dwarf, Night Elf, or Troll.
Race recommendation: Dwarf is a strong general choice for Alliance, while Troll is an excellent leveling choice for Horde. Night Elf is a good alternative for Alliance players who value movement speed and critical strike potential.
Tips and Tricks
1. Visit your trainer regularly
Make sure you visit your Hunter trainer as you level. Important milestones in the original guide include levels 10, 18, and 26, when you can learn key abilities such as Tame Beast, Multi-Shot, and Rapid Fire.
Check your spellbook and trainer for available ranks and abilities rather than assuming every skill unlocks at the same level across beta updates.
2. Keep enough ammunition
Always bring enough arrows or bullets before heading out to quest or enter a dungeon. Running out of ammunition severely limits your ability to deal ranged damage.
Keep an eye on your inventory and restock whenever you visit a vendor.
3. Manage threat carefully
Your pet is your frontline, so let it engage enemies before you start using powerful attacks.
Rapid Fire and other burst abilities can generate threat quickly. Use them carefully while soloing, especially against enemies that hit hard.
In dungeons, you can usually use your damage abilities more aggressively once the tank has established threat.
4. Learn to kite
Kiting means damaging an enemy while keeping it at a distance.
Shoot, then move away to create space.
Use Concussive Shot or Wing Clip to slow approaching enemies.
Stop briefly to let Auto Shot fire.
Repeat while maintaining enough distance to stay safe.
Remember that Auto Shot requires a short stationary period in the current beta.
5. Use traps to control dangerous enemies
Freezing Trap can disable an enemy while you deal with another. Place it strategically when multiple enemies reach you.
Explosive or Frost-based traps can also contribute damage or slow enemies in group encounters. Traps are placed at your current position, so plan your movement before using them.
6. Choose the right pet
Your pet should complement your playstyle.
Boar: Useful early on because Charge helps it engage quickly.
Tallstrider: Offers Dust Cloud utility that complements physical damage.
Other pet families: May provide unique damage, control, or utility abilities.
Keep your pet happy, maintain its health, and learn its abilities. A neglected pet can significantly reduce your leveling efficiency.
7. Recommended stat priority
Agility > Strength and Intellect
Agility: Your primary stat for ranged damage and critical strike potential.
Strength: Provides attack power and can help when you need to fight in melee.
Intellect: Increases your mana pool, allowing more ability usage.
Stamina: Improves survivability and can be valuable when enemies reach you frequently.
Prioritize Agility when comparing gear, but consider the overall item stats and your current needs.
8. Dungeon and group play
Hunters are valuable group members thanks to their ranged damage, pets, and crowd control.
Keep Hunter's Mark on the main target when appropriate.
Let the tank establish threat before using Multi-Shot.
Use traps to control dangerous enemies or slow approaching mobs.
Keep your pet under control so it does not pull extra enemies.
Use Rapid Fire and other cooldowns when the group can handle the additional threat.
Good positioning and careful target selection are often more valuable than maximizing damage on every global cooldown.
9. Useful macros
Auto Shot
Starts Auto Shot without toggling it off when pressed repeatedly.
#showtooltip Auto Shot
/cleartarget [dead]
/targetenemy [noharm]
/cast !Auto Shot
Melee attacks
Starts your melee auto-attack and attempts to use your melee abilities.
/startattack
/cast Raptor Strike
/cast Mongoose Bite
Pet Attack
Sends your pet to attack and attempts to use its movement abilities.
/petattack
/cast Charge
/cast Dash
Pet Passive and Follow
Useful for quickly recalling your pet or preventing it from continuing to attack.
/petpassive
/petfollow
Macro behavior can depend on ability availability, cooldowns, and the current client implementation. Test your macros before relying on them in dangerous encounters.
---
Final recommendation: Beast Mastery is an excellent leveling specialization for WoW: Forever. Keep your pet healthy, use Auto Shot consistently, manage threat carefully, and choose between Summon Hawk and Arcane Shot based on the situation. With good positioning and regular weapon and skill upgrades, Hunter can level efficiently while remaining effective in dungeons and group content.
