Mage Leveling Guide — WoW: Forever Beta (Levels 1–30)
Overview
7
Frost Mage is one of the most comfortable and efficient classes for leveling in WoW: Forever Beta. Its strength lies in crowd control, slowing effects, mobility, and the ability to deal damage while keeping enemies at a safe distance.
Unlike many other classes, Mages can conjure their own food and water, reducing consumable costs and allowing them to spend more time leveling instead of recovering between fights.
Why Frost is the recommended leveling specialization:
Crowd Control: Frost Nova, Frostbite, and other slowing effects help you control enemies.
Kiting: Frostbolt and Blizzard allow you to deal damage while keeping enemies away.
Burst Damage: Ice Lance deals significantly more damage to frozen targets.
AoE Farming: Gather groups of enemies and eliminate them with powerful area-of-effect spells.
Self-Sufficiency: Conjure Food and Conjure Water reduce your reliance on vendors.
Arcane and Fire are also viable options, but Frost is generally the more comfortable choice for solo leveling thanks to its combination of damage, survivability, and crowd control.

Recommended Talent Progression
Target: 21 points in Frost by level 30, following the original guide's progression.
Talent Points Purpose
Improved Frostbolt 5/5 Improves your primary single-target damage spell.
Frostbite 2/3 Gives your Frost spells a chance to freeze enemies.
Ice Shards 5/5 Increases the critical strike damage of your Frost spells.
Piercing Ice 3/3 Increases Frost damage.
Ice Lance 1/1 Provides instant damage with excellent synergy against frozen targets.
Improved Blizzard 1/3 Adds extra slowing potential to Blizzard.
Shatter 3/3 Increases critical strike chance against frozen targets.
Fingers of Frost Invest when available Allows certain spells to treat targets as frozen.
Talent priority: Improve Frostbolt first, invest in Frostbite and Ice Shards, then pick up Piercing Ice, Ice Lance, and Shatter to strengthen your damage against frozen enemies.
At level 30, Fingers of Frost becomes an important part of your toolkit, allowing you to take advantage of Ice Lance without always needing to freeze enemies directly.
Note: The exact talent point allocation and talent availability should be verified against the current Beta talent calculator, as WoW: Forever may change talent trees and progression.
Gameplay and Main Abilities
The most important rule for Frost Mage leveling is to control your enemies before they can reach you. Slow them, maintain your distance, and use freeze effects to create opportunities for powerful Ice Lance hits.
Frostbolt
Your primary damage spell. It deals Frost damage and slows the target, making it ideal for most single-target encounters.
Ice Lance
An instant-cast spell that deals significantly increased damage against frozen targets. Use it after Frost Nova, a Frostbite proc, or a Fingers of Frost proc.
Frost Nova
Roots nearby enemies, giving you time to create distance, reposition, or set up an Ice Lance combo.
Blizzard
Your primary AoE damage spell. Use it against groups of enemies, especially when you can keep them inside its area of effect.
Blink
Your main mobility tool. Use it to escape melee range, avoid dangerous situations, or quickly restore distance between yourself and your enemies.
Other Important Abilities
Cone of Cold: Deals damage and slows enemies in front of you.
Arcane Explosion: Deals instant AoE damage around you, useful for finishing off nearby enemies.
Polymorph: Temporarily removes an eligible enemy from combat.
Counterspell: Interrupts enemy spellcasting.
Arcane Intellect: Increases Intellect. Keep it active on yourself and your party.
Conjure Food / Conjure Water: Allows you to restore health and mana without constantly spending gold.
Ice Block: Makes you immune to most attacks and effects for a short time, providing an emergency defensive cooldown.
Major Changes
WoW: Forever Beta includes changes to talents, racial abilities, and class mechanics, so you should not automatically assume every recommendation from Classic WoW applies unchanged.
Frost and Blizzard
Changes to Blizzard's slowing effect can affect how reliably you kite groups of enemies. Avoid relying exclusively on one slowing spell when AoE farming.
Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost
Ice Lance remains a key part of the Frost Mage toolkit. Freeze effects create opportunities for increased damage, while Fingers of Frost can provide additional opportunities to use this synergy.
Updated Racial Abilities
Racial bonuses in Forever may differ from their traditional Classic WoW versions. Compare the abilities available in the current Beta instead of relying solely on older racial rankings.
Mana Management
Mana efficiency remains important during leveling. Repeatedly casting expensive spells can slow your progress by forcing you to stop and recover after every encounter.
Rotation
Frost Mage does not have a rigid leveling rotation. Instead, prioritize abilities based on the number of enemies, available freeze effects, and your current mana.
Single-Target Rotation
1
Frostbolt
Open from range and maintain your slow effect.
2
Ice Lance
Use against frozen targets or when Fingers of Frost activates.
3
Frost Nova
Use when enemies get too close, then move away and resume kiting.
4
Wand Auto Attacks
Finish weakened enemies without spending additional mana.
Single-target tips:
Do not waste Frost Nova when an enemy is still far away. Save it for dangerous approaches or a useful Ice Lance setup.
Use Fingers of Frost procs efficiently, especially against tougher enemies.
Use Blink to avoid damage or escape being surrounded rather than for minor repositioning.
Against caster enemies, keep Counterspell ready for dangerous casts.
AoE Rotation
1
Gather a small group of enemies
Only pull as many enemies as you can safely control.
2
Frost Nova
Root enemies when they get close, then move to a safe distance.
3
Blizzard
Deal AoE damage while keeping enemies inside the spell's area.
4
Cone of Cold / Arcane Explosion
Use Cone of Cold to slow enemies while retreating. Use Arcane Explosion when enemies are nearby or need finishing off.
Blizzard has a casting time and consumes mana, so make sure enemies will remain in its area long enough to justify the cost. If they spread out or approach too quickly, switch back to single-target spells rather than wasting mana.
Races
The original guide recommends Gnome for the Alliance and Troll for the Horde. Skyborne is also worth considering because WoW: Forever features modified racial abilities.
Alliance — Gnome
Recommended
Expansive Mind: Provides additional mana capacity.
Eureka!: Improves the damage and mana efficiency of your next spells.
Escape Artist: Helps you escape roots and snares.
An excellent choice for solo leveling, where mana efficiency and avoiding melee damage are particularly valuable.
Horde — Troll
Recommended
Berserking: Increases casting speed.
Beast Slaying: Provides a damage advantage against certain enemy types.
Regeneration: Improves health recovery.
A strong option for faster kills and efficient leveling against suitable enemies.
Alliance — Skyborne
An alternative with unique Forever racial bonuses. Check the current effects of Wind Blessed and other available abilities before comparing it with Gnome.
Horde — Undead
A viable alternative if you prefer the race's aesthetics and racial abilities. You do not need to choose Troll exclusively for leveling efficiency.
Alliance — Human
A versatile option for Alliance players who value their preferred character identity over optimizing every racial bonus.
Horde — Orc
Another alternative with its own combat advantages. Check how its racial abilities work in the current Beta before making a final decision.
Final recommendation: Choose Gnome for Alliance and Troll for Horde if your main goal is efficient leveling. However, racial differences should not outweigh your enjoyment of the character.
Tips and Tricks
Mana Management
Use your wand. Once an enemy is slowed and poses little threat, continue dealing damage with wand attacks instead of repeatedly casting Frostbolt.
Conjure food and water in advance. Use downtime to prepare supplies for the next encounters.
Consider lower spell ranks. Lower ranks can help conserve mana when the main goal is crowd control rather than maximum damage.
Use Mana Gems and mana potions when they can prevent a long recovery break.
Visit your Mage Trainer regularly. New ranks of your main damage spells are important for keeping your leveling speed consistent.
Crowd Control and Survival
Move away immediately after Frost Nova instead of standing next to rooted enemies.
Avoid using Blink unnecessarily if it could cause you to pull additional mobs.
Do not gather a large group of enemies without planning an escape route.
Save Counterspell for dangerous enemy casts.
Use Polymorph to temporarily remove an eligible enemy from combat. Remember that not every enemy can be affected.
Gear and Stats
Stat Priority
Spell Power Increases spell damage and helps kill enemies faster.
Intellect Increases mana capacity and, depending on the Beta's mechanics, may contribute to spell critical strike chance.
Spirit Helps with mana regeneration, especially when you are not actively spending mana.
Stamina Increases health and makes mistakes less punishing.
Spell Power is valuable for increasing your damage, but do not sacrifice all defensive stats for a small DPS increase. A little extra Stamina can be useful when learning to kite multiple enemies.
Dungeon and Group Content
Frost Mage is a valuable dungeon class thanks to its crowd control, AoE damage, and ability to support the group.
Keep Arcane Intellect active on party members.
Conjure water for allies who need to recover mana.
Use Polymorph to control dangerous enemies.
Use Frost Nova in emergencies, while considering the tank's position and the group's safety.
If you are not expected to take physical damage, consider Mage Armor instead of Frost Armor or Ice Armor, depending on the available Beta mechanics.
Watch your threat level. Blizzard can pull enemies away from the tank if you deal too much damage too early.
