The following text is transcribed from the Journal.
The heart is a pump, nothing more, designed to push precious blood around the circulatory system, so that our weak and feeble frames can function. Yet, metaphysically, it is the most important organ, for it houses our emotional centre, the very essence of what makes us human. A withered heart isn't just a heart that has languished. Nor is it just a heart that is drained of blood. No, a withered heart has had all the humanity leeched from it, emptied of emotion, or connection, of self.
This process is imperfect, of course, and tiny fragments of soul-matter remain, which can be refined and extracted from the heart - withdrawing the last remnants of what made the owner "them".
