Skills
skill01Overview
This page covers every skill you can train in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. For level-99 rewards, see Capes of Accomplishment. For per-skill training routes, see skill training guides.
Skills are one of the core RPG systems in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Almost every important activity in Ashenfall is tied to a skill: gathering resources levels Gathering skills, building your base improves Construction, crafting equipment levels Artisan, and combat advances the game's combat skills.
The system follows the classic RuneScape approach: you gain XP by performing actions related to a skill. Chop trees to level Woodcutting, mine ore to level Mining, cook food to level Cooking. As a skill rises, new abilities, recipes, perks, and gameplay options unlock through its Skill Tree.
This guide covers all 12 Skills in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, the level 99 cap, Skill Trees, how to earn XP, skill categories, priority skills for new players, and the best skill combinations.
02What Are Skills in RuneScape: Dragonwilds?
Skills are the character progression system that determines what your character can do across combat, gathering, crafting, building, and exploration.
Unlike traditional RPGs, you do not distribute stat points after leveling up. Each skill improves naturally as you perform activities associated with it.
For example:
- Chop trees → gain Woodcutting XP
- Mine ore and stone → gain Mining XP
- Build structures → gain Construction XP
- Craft weapons, armor, and tools → gain Artisan XP
- Cook food → gain Cooking XP
- Catch fish → gain Fishing XP
- Fight with melee weapons → gain Attack XP
- Cast spells → gain Magic XP
- Attack from a distance → gain Ranged XP
Higher skill levels unlock more options in that skill's tree — new Spells, recipes, passive bonuses, and movement abilities. Skills are more than numbers on a character sheet.
03How Many Skills Are There in RuneScape: Dragonwilds?
At the current Early Access stage, RuneScape: Dragonwilds has 12 available Skills:
| Skill | Type | Main Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Combat | Melee combat | |
| Combat | Magic attacks and spells | |
| Combat | Ranged combat | |
| Gathering | Mining ore, stone, and other resources | |
| Gathering | Gathering wood | |
| Gathering | Growing crops and plants | |
| Gathering | Catching fish | |
| Artisan | Creating runes | |
| Artisan | Building your base and structures | |
| Artisan | Crafting weapons, armor, and tools | |
| Artisan | Preparing food | |
| Support | Mobility, stamina, and movement |
Prayer has been announced as a future skill and is not counted among the currently available Skills.
The lineup expanded throughout Early Access. Major additions and updates include Magic, Ranged, Farming, Fishing, and Agility.
04Maximum Skill Level — Level 99
The maximum level for every existing skill in RuneScape: Dragonwilds is 99.
Earlier Early Access builds used much lower caps. Jagex later raised the cap for all existing skills to 99, creating a long-term progression goal. Reaching 99 does not mean every milestone already has unique content — Skill Trees continue to gain abilities, recipes, and bonuses in updates.
For most players, level 99 is a long-term goal, not a requirement to progress through Ashenfall.
05How Do You Level Skills?
The basic rule is simple:
Perform activities related to the skill you want to level.
You usually do not need a trainer NPC. Start mining to level Mining, chop trees for Woodcutting, cook for Cooking — the same principle applies across the skill set:
Mining → mine resources
Woodcutting → chop trees
Fishing → catch fish
Farming → grow crops
Construction → build structures
Artisan → craft items
Cooking → prepare food
Attack → fight with melee weapons
Magic → use magic
Ranged → attack from a distance
Agility → move around the world and complete Agility Courses
As your level increases, new options unlock in that skill's Skill Tree.
06Skill Trees Explained
Every skill has its own Skill Tree. Open the Skills menu with the K key to see levels, XP, and progress toward the next level. Selecting a skill opens its tree of unlocks.
Depending on the skill, a tree may include:
- New abilities
- Skill Spells
- Passive bonuses
- New recipes
- Increased efficiency
- New movement options
- Additional building options
- Combat upgrades
Gaining a skill level is not only a number going up — milestones can change how you explore, fight, craft, and travel.
07Combat Skills
There are three main combat skills in RuneScape: Dragonwilds:
Each represents a distinct combat style with its own progression path.
Attack
Attack is the primary melee combat skill. You gain XP by using melee weapons against enemies. Leveling Attack unlocks melee-focused progression and combat improvements.
Attack fits players who prefer:
- Swords and other melee weapons
- Close-range combat
- Blocking and parrying
- Fighting enemies up close
- An aggressive playstyle
As gear improves, push into more dangerous areas rather than farming the weakest enemies. Stronger foes usually give better XP and better loot while you progress.
Dedicated training tips: Attack training.
Magic
Magic is the spellcasting combat skill. Progression is built around Spells and magical abilities rather than melee weapons.
Magic is closely linked to Runecrafting, because Runes power many spells. A strong Magic-focused loop looks like:
Magic → Runecrafting → Resource Gathering → Runes
That path reduces reliance on finding or buying runes and keeps your own supply flowing. Training guide: Magic training.
Ranged
Ranged is the combat skill for attacking enemies from a distance. It covers ranged attacks and the weapons that support them.
Ranged shines against dangerous enemies where staying back is safer. Treat it as its own combat style — not a variant of melee. Training guide: Ranged training.
08Gathering Skills
Gathering skills supply the raw materials that power crafting, building, and survival. The main Gathering skills are Mining, Woodcutting, Farming, and Fishing.
If Gathering answers "Where do I get resources?", Artisan skills answer "What can I make with them?".
Mining
Mining gathers Ore, stone, and other materials from the world. It is one of the strongest early-game priorities because mined resources feed weapons, tools, armor, construction, and Artisan progression.
Level Mining alongside exploration. Deeper regions hold better resources, so you can collect useful materials and XP without grinding the same low-tier nodes for hours. Training guide: Mining training.
Woodcutting
Woodcutting gathers wood from trees. It looks simple, but wood is one of the most useful resources in Dragonwilds — used for Construction, crafting, processing materials, base building, and many components.
Keep a healthy wood stock before long expeditions; in a survival game it disappears from storage faster than expected. Training guide: Woodcutting training.
Farming
Farming grows plants and crops at your base. Unlike Mining or Woodcutting, it is a renewable long-term resource loop:
- Prepare a farming area
- Plant crops
- Maintain them
- Wait for growth
- Harvest
- Use the crops in other systems
Farming pairs especially well with Cooking. Players who want reliable food should develop Farming + Cooking together. Training guide: Farming training.
Fishing
Fishing was added in the game's 2026 updates. Catch fish in rivers and other suitable spots, then progress through Fishing's own Skill Tree.
Fishing → Fish → Cooking → Food
Together with Cooking, Fishing forms a reliable survival and food loop while you explore. Training guide: Fishing training.
09Artisan Skills
Artisan skills turn collected resources into useful items. The main Artisan skills are Artisan, Construction, Cooking, and Runecrafting.
If Gathering answers "How do I get resources?", Artisan skills answer "What do I do with those resources?".
Artisan
Artisan is a central crafting skill for weapons, armor, tools, and other equipment.
Mining → Ore → Processing → Artisan → Weapons and Armor
The same idea applies to wood, leather, and other materials. Level Artisan alongside Mining, Woodcutting, and other gathering rather than in isolation. Training guide: Artisan training.
Construction
Construction covers building your base — one of the most useful non-combat skills. Use it for walls, floors, roofs, furniture, workstations, functional structures, and decoration via Buildings.
Higher Construction unlocks more building options. Even players who skip elaborate bases benefit from a efficient production setup that cuts travel time for processing resources. Training guide: Construction training.
Cooking
Cooking turns raw ingredients into prepared Food. It connects to Fishing, Farming, hunting, and other ingredient sources:
Farming / Fishing → Ingredients → Cooking → Food → Exploration and Combat
A reliable food supply makes exploration and fights easier in dangerous parts of Ashenfall. Training guide: Cooking training.
Runecrafting
Runecrafting creates Runes for Magic-focused characters. Early Access changes added more training options through the Rune Altar.
Resource Gathering → Runecrafting → Runes → Magic → Spells
For mages, Runecrafting is a core part of the progression path. Training guide: Runecrafting training.
10Agility
Agility is one of the most distinctive Dragonwilds skills. Instead of crafting or gathering, it focuses on movement and mobility.
Dedicated Agility Courses let you run obstacle routes, collect orbs, and improve completion times. Agility XP also comes from normal travel, so the skill can rise while you explore.
A major benefit is stamina efficiency while sprinting. Higher milestones add mobility and carrying benefits, including:
- Agility shortcuts
- Reduced fall damage
- Improved mobility
- Additional jumping capabilities
- Air movement abilities
- New Skill Spells
One standout ability is Recall — create a magical point and return to it later. Agility improves exploration, gathering trips, carrying capacity, combat mobility, and travel efficiency. Training guide: Agility training.
11Which Skills Should You Level First?
New players do not need to level every skill equally. Focus on a small set that supports your playstyle:
Mining — early materials for tools, weapons, armor, and progression.
Woodcutting — constant demand for Construction and crafting recipes.
Artisan — turns raw materials into equipment and tools.
Construction — a developed base makes almost every system easier.
Cooking — reliable food for harder regions.
Agility — mobility and stamina become more valuable as you range farther across Ashenfall.- Combat skills — once you pick a style: Melee → Attack, Magic → Magic, Ranged → Ranged.
12Best Skill Combinations
Dragonwilds skills form natural progression chains. These combinations level efficiently together:
Mining + Artisan
Mining provides raw materials; Artisan turns them into gear.
Mining → Ore → Processing → Artisan → Weapons and Armor
Woodcutting + Construction
Woodcutting supplies the wood your base needs.
Woodcutting → Logs → Construction → Base
Fishing + Cooking
Fishing → Fish → Cooking → Food
Farming + Cooking
Farming is a renewable ingredient source.
Farming → Crops → Cooking → Food
Runecrafting + Magic
The natural Magic-focused pair.
Runecrafting → Runes → Magic → Spells
Agility + everything else
Agility is universal utility — explorers, gatherers, builders, and combat players all benefit from better movement across Ashenfall.
13How to Level Skills Faster
The most efficient approach is to avoid treating XP grinding as a separate activity. Combine training with what you already need to do:
- Going mining? Level Mining.
- Chopping trees along the way? Gain Woodcutting XP.
- Back at base? Craft with Artisan.
- Building new structures? Gain Construction XP.
- Cooking stored ingredients? Level Cooking.
One expedition can advance several skills at once. In a survival game you already need resources for crafting, building, exploration, and combat — stack XP on those loops.
14How to Check Your Skill Level
Open the Skills menu with the K key. There you can see:
- Current skill level
- XP earned
- XP required for the next level
- Skill Tree progression
- Upcoming unlocks
- Abilities and bonuses
Select a skill to open its progression tree and milestone unlocks. For required XP per level, see Experience.
15Skills and Overall Character Progression
Skill level alone does not make a character powerful. Dragonwilds progression also depends on:
- Skills — unlock abilities and gameplay options.
- Gear — improves combat effectiveness.
- Resources — keep crafting and upgrading going.
- Base — storage, crafting, and production.
- Exploration — new areas, resources, and challenges.
The strongest progression develops skills alongside equipment, resource loops, and access to new regions.
16How Has the Skills System Changed?
The Skills system is still evolving with RuneScape: Dragonwilds Early Access. Jagex has already expanded it by:
- Adding Magic
- Adding Ranged
- Adding Farming
- Adding Fishing
- Reworking Runecrafting
- Raising the maximum skill level to 99
- Adding Agility
- Expanding Skill Trees
- Introducing new abilities and unlocks
Agility, for example, added courses, movement-based XP, stamina improvements, carrying capacity, shortcuts, and new movement abilities. Expect Skills to keep growing as Dragonwilds receives updates.
17Conclusion
Skills are a foundation of RuneScape: Dragonwilds, connecting combat, survival, crafting, construction, exploration, and resource gathering into one progression system.
There are currently 12 Skills available:
Attack — melee combat
Magic — magic and spellcasting
Ranged — ranged combat
Mining — resource gathering
Woodcutting — gathering wood
Farming — growing crops
Fishing — catching fish
Runecrafting — creating runes
Construction — building
Artisan — crafting equipment and tools
Cooking — preparing food
Agility — mobility and movement
The maximum level is 99. XP comes from doing the activities tied to each skill. You do not need to level everything at once — pick a playstyle, focus on skills that reinforce each other, and let progression grow as you explore Ashenfall.
That is what makes the system effective: you are not only grinding levels — you are getting better at everything you do in the world.
