The shadow crossbow is a power level 6 crossbow that can be crafted at a fletching bench. The recipe is unlocked after studying the sinister mechanism, which can be found in chests throughout Dowdun Reach or purchased from Postie Pete's Evil Emporium for 300 infernal fragments. It can be ascended at a mystic forge using ascension cores.

Its special effect deals 15% increased damage to weakpoints, however it has +25% Reload Duration, meaning it reloads slower than other crossbows.

When looking to maximize the damage done per metal or enchanted bolts, this is the pick. However, as it reloads slower than most other crossbows and the blurite crossbow and dorgeshuun crossbow reload faster than most other crossbows, it reloads significantly slower by comparison. One of the most useful aspects of a crossbow is the flinch that they cause per hit, and those are simply able to do that more often. The choice comes down to what bolt type is preferred, as the dorgeshuun can only fire bone bolts.

Climb the turrets of Dowdun Reach in its prime, and you would have found the Black Knight Snipers. They would scan the skyline for threat - for the beating wings of a dragon. There was no greater trophy for the Black Snipers. One[sic] one occasion, a bolt was loosed at Imaru. She had arrived at the keep for diplomatic purposes, and was rewarded with a bolt to the neck. You could see the conflict within her, as her urges were swallowed. For a second, a disdainful eye moved to the Black Sniper. But she reset and continued to talk to Lord Rasmodel and Alric like nothing happened. Restraint was certainly beaten into the Black Snipers that night.
