01Lodestone

This article is about the active Lodestone. For the inactive Lodestone, see Lodestone (Inactive).

Lodestone is a player-built fast travel structure in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. It allows players to teleport between active Lodestones placed across Ashenfall, making it one of the most useful tools for exploration, resource gathering, base building, and returning safely from distant areas.

Unlike the Lodestone network in RuneScape, fast travel in RuneScape: Dragonwilds is not free. Teleporting consumes Law Runes, and the cost is affected by the distance to the destination and the weight carried by the player.

The first Lodestone you build also activates the previously inactive Lodestone located in the Temple Woods starting area. This gives players an initial connection between their own Lodestone and the starting region.

02Overview

A Lodestone is a magical teleportation platform that connects one location in Ashenfall to another.

Once multiple Lodestones have been placed, players can interact with one of them to open the fast travel map and select another available Lodestone.

Lodestones are particularly useful for:

  • returning to a main base;
  • travelling between distant regions;
  • reaching resource-rich areas;
  • repeatedly entering Dragonkin Vaults;
  • setting up temporary forward bases;
  • reducing long journeys through dangerous areas;
  • transporting resources back to storage;
  • creating efficient routes between important locations.

The system is designed around a simple principle: build your own fast travel network as you explore the world.

03How to unlock Lodestone

The Lodestone recipe becomes available after obtaining a Vault Core.

Vault Cores are found inside Dragonkin Vaults, which are marked on the world map. Early Vaults can be found in the starting regions, allowing players to unlock fast travel relatively early in their playthrough.

A Vault Core is obtained from a pedestal inside a Vault. Players do not necessarily need to completely clear a Vault before obtaining a Core, although Vaults contain dangerous enemies and traps, making proper preparation advisable.

Once a Vault Core has been obtained, the Lodestone recipe becomes available in the Build Menu.

How many Vault Cores do you need?

Each player-built Lodestone requires one Vault Core.

Because Vault Cores are relatively valuable early in the game, new players should think carefully about where they place their first Lodestones.

04How to build a Lodestone

Lodestones are constructed directly through the Build Menu.

No crafting station is required.

You need:

  • 32 Stone
  • 20 Rune Essence
  • 1 Vault Core

Once the Lodestone has been crafted, place it at the desired location.

The structure can then be interacted with to access the fast travel map.

06How to use Lodestone

After placing a Lodestone, walk up to it and interact with it.

This opens the fast travel interface, where you can select another active Lodestone.

The basic process is:

Build Lodestone → Place Lodestone → Interact → Select destination → Pay Law Runes → Teleport

The first player-built Lodestone also activates the inactive Lodestone in the Temple Woods starting area, giving you an initial destination even if you have only constructed one Lodestone yourself.

Important

You cannot simply teleport from anywhere in the world to any Lodestone.

The Lodestone network is based around physical Lodestone structures. You need to interact with a Lodestone to initiate the teleport.

This makes Lodestone placement an important part of exploration and base planning.

07Teleportation cost

Teleporting through a Lodestone consumes Law Runes.

The cost is not a simple fixed amount.

It depends primarily on:

  • the distance to the destination;
  • the player's carried weight.

The minimum teleport cost is 1 Law Rune.

This means a short teleport while carrying very little can be extremely cheap, while a long-distance teleport with a heavily loaded inventory can cost considerably more.

Current teleport cost mechanics

The original Lodestone system used a distance-and-weight calculation. The game's teleport costs were later reduced significantly.

In Update 0.11.2, Jagex stated that teleport costs were reduced by approximately half on average. The change was intended to make long-distance travel less punishing, particularly when travelling from the common early-game base areas into more remote parts of Ashenfall.

This is important when reading older Dragonwilds guides.

Some guides published shortly after Early Access launched describe Lodestone travel as having fixed or much higher Law Rune requirements. Those values should not be treated as current. For example, early 2025 guides described costs such as 10 or 15 Law Runes per teleport, while the current system uses a variable cost.

Carry weight matters

The amount of weight carried by your character affects the teleport cost.

As a result, players travelling with a completely full inventory may spend considerably more Law Runes than players travelling with an almost empty inventory.

This creates an interesting choice:

Carry everything home → more expensive teleport

or

Reduce your carried weight → cheaper teleport

For long-distance trips, managing inventory weight before teleporting can save a substantial number of Law Runes.

08How to save Law Runes

Law Runes are the main ongoing cost of the Lodestone network.

There are several ways to reduce your consumption.

Keep your inventory light

Before making a long-distance teleport, check your carried weight.

If you are returning to your base after gathering resources, you may be tempted to bring everything with you. However, a heavily loaded inventory can increase the teleport cost.

This is especially relevant after long mining or gathering trips.

Build Lodestones closer to your activities

Instead of repeatedly teleporting across the entire map, build additional Lodestones near areas you visit frequently.

For example:

Main Base → Regional Lodestone → Vault

is usually more efficient than:

Main Base → Vault → Main Base

if you repeatedly farm the same Vault.

Use Law Rune sources efficiently

The 0.11.2 update increased the availability of runes and improved Anima Vent output.

Standard Anima Vents can now produce up to 100 Runes, while Concentrated Anima Vents can produce up to 300 Runes. Jagex also reduced the base Rune conversion ratio from 1:10 to 1:5, making rune production more accessible.

This makes maintaining a Lodestone network much easier than it was during the game's early versions.

09Best Lodestone locations

There is no single best Lodestone location for every player.

The ideal location depends on what you are doing in that part of Ashenfall.

Generally, the best places are close to:

  • your main base;
  • a secondary base;
  • Dragonkin Vaults;
  • major resource areas;
  • Anima Vents;
  • important quest locations;
  • difficult regions that would otherwise require a long return journey.

Main base

Your first player-built Lodestone is usually best placed near your main base.

This gives you a reliable destination for returning from expeditions.

A Lodestone near your storage area is especially useful because you can immediately unload resources after teleporting home.

Near a Vault

A Lodestone near a frequently visited Vault can save a huge amount of walking time.

This is particularly useful if you are farming:

Repeated Vault runs become significantly more convenient when the entrance is only a short walk from a Lodestone.

Near an Anima Vent

A Lodestone near a Law Rune Anima Vent can create an efficient rune supply route.

For players who rely heavily on fast travel, this can turn the Lodestone network into a self-sustaining travel system:

Lodestone → Anima Vent → Law Runes → Lodestone → exploration

Jagex specifically increased Anima Vent output as part of the changes designed to make Law Runes more accessible.

10Lodestone placement tips

Choosing the location of a Lodestone is more important than simply placing one wherever you happen to be standing.

Before building, ask:

1. Will I return here often?

A Lodestone used once is usually a poor investment.

Prioritize areas you expect to revisit.

2. Is there a useful resource nearby?

Resource-heavy regions make good permanent fast travel destinations.

3. Is there a Vault nearby?

A Lodestone near a Vault can make repeated dungeon runs considerably faster.

4. Is there a Law Rune source nearby?

An Anima Vent can make an otherwise ordinary location much more valuable.

5. Can I combine it with a base?

A small forward base containing storage, a bed and a Lodestone can be more useful than one enormous central base.

11Lodestone and bases

Lodestones can dramatically change how you approach base building.

A common beginner strategy is to build one large base and travel everywhere from it.

That works, but it is not always the most efficient approach.

A better strategy for long expeditions is often:

Main Base

↓

Regional Lodestone

↓

Small Forward Base

↓

Local resources / Vault / quests

This reduces the number of long-distance journeys and gives you a safe logistical point in a new region.

Recent community guides also recommend pairing Lodestones with regional bases rather than relying exclusively on one central base.

12One base or multiple bases?

Choosing between one large settlement and a network of smaller bases changes how valuable each Lodestone becomes.

One large base

Best for players who enjoy building large settlements and keeping all crafting infrastructure in one place.

Advantages

  • Everything is stored together.
  • All crafting stations are in one location.
  • Easier to organize resources.
  • Less construction in remote regions.

Disadvantages

  • Long return journeys.
  • Greater reliance on expensive long-distance teleports.
  • More time spent travelling between distant resource areas and the main base.

Multiple smaller bases

A network of smaller bases works particularly well with Lodestones.

Each regional base can contain:

  • a bed;
  • storage;
  • essential crafting stations;
  • food;
  • equipment;
  • a Lodestone.

This turns Lodestones into part of your overall logistics network.

13Lodestone and Law Runes

Law Runes are the key consumable used by the Lodestone system.

This makes Runecrafting an important supporting skill for players who rely heavily on fast travel.

Law Runes can be produced through the game's rune systems, while Anima Vents provide another source of runes.

The 0.11.2 update specifically addressed Law Rune availability and teleport costs. Jagex increased rune production from Anima Vents while simultaneously reducing teleport costs, making long-distance travel significantly more sustainable.

Law Rune farming strategy

A practical long-term strategy is to establish a route connecting:

Base → Lodestone → Law Rune source → Lodestone → resource area

This allows you to replenish your teleportation resources while travelling through the world.

14Dowdun Reach

Areas within Downdun Reach that allow the players to build Lodestones.

Dowdun Reach has special restrictions on Lodestone construction.

Most areas of the region prevent players from building their own Lodestones.

The known areas where player-built Lodestones are permitted include:

  • The Approach
  • The Pastures
  • The Menagerie
  • The Courtyard

This makes Lodestone placement particularly important in Dowdun Reach.

Instead of assuming you can place a Lodestone wherever you want, plan your route around the areas where construction is allowed.

The Approach

The Approach contains a fixed-location Lodestone.

A problem affecting this Lodestone was specifically addressed in an April 2026 update. This makes the location an important fixed fast travel point for players progressing through Dowdun Reach.

15Lodestone vs other travel methods

Lodestone is the main long-distance fast travel system, but it should not necessarily replace every other form of movement.

Travel methodBest use
LodestoneLong-distance travel between established locations
RecallReturning to a specific marked location
AgilityFaster movement and shortcuts
MountsRapid travel across the overworld
Walking/RunningExploration and short-distance travel

This distinction becomes increasingly important as the game adds more movement mechanics.

Lodestones are best thought of as fixed fast travel infrastructure, rather than the only way to move quickly.

16Lodestone strategy for new players

If you have just unlocked your first Vault Core, you do not need to build Lodestones everywhere immediately.

A simple progression is:

Early game

Build your first Lodestone near your main base.

Use the activated Temple Woods Lodestone as your second connection.

Mid game

Add Lodestones near important resource areas and frequently visited Vaults.

Start maintaining a reliable Law Rune supply.

Late game

Build a larger network connecting major regions, bases, Vaults and resource areas.

At this point, the goal is no longer simply to "unlock fast travel".

Instead, you are building a transport network across Ashenfall.

17Common mistakes

Avoid these common Lodestone mistakes when building your fast travel network.

Building too close to your existing Lodestone

A second Lodestone that provides almost no new coverage has limited value.

Choose locations that eliminate a long journey.

Spending every Vault Core immediately

Vault Cores are important resources, particularly early in the game.

Consider your intended route before spending one on a new Lodestone.

Ignoring carry weight

A heavy inventory can increase the Law Rune cost of a long teleport.

Always consider your weight before travelling long distances.

Trusting old teleport costs

Many guides from April 2025 describe fixed costs such as 10 or 15 Law Runes.

Those figures reflect the early version of the game and should not be used as the current teleportation cost. The current system uses variable costs, and Jagex significantly reduced them in Update 0.11.2.

Building Lodestones without a purpose

A Lodestone is most valuable when it saves a significant amount of travel time.

Think about what the location connects before placing it.

18Fast travel tips

Tip 1: Keep Law Runes in your inventory

Running out of Law Runes far from your base can force you to make a long journey on foot.

Tip 2: Watch your weight

Before a long teleport, check how much you are carrying.

Tip 3: Build near recurring activities

A location you visit repeatedly is a better Lodestone destination than a location you visit once.

Tip 4: Use Vaults as travel anchors

Vaults are excellent destinations because they often provide both valuable loot and reasons to return.

Tip 5: Build forward bases

When entering a new region, consider creating a small base with a bed, storage and Lodestone.

Tip 6: Connect resource loops

The most efficient Lodestone networks connect several useful locations rather than simply connecting two bases.

19Update history

This information is based on the changelogs of the game.

update29 July 2026 (0.12.1):

20FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about Lodestones in RuneScape: Dragonwilds.

What is a Lodestone in RuneScape: Dragonwilds?

A Lodestone is a player-built structure used for fast travel between connected Lodestones throughout Ashenfall.

How do you unlock Lodestone in Dragonwilds?

Obtain a Vault Core from a Dragonkin Vault. This unlocks the Lodestone recipe in the Build Menu.

What materials are needed to build a Lodestone?

One Lodestone requires:

  • 32 Stone
  • 20 Rune Essence
  • 1 Vault Core

Does Lodestone cost Law Runes?

Yes. Teleporting between Lodestones consumes Law Runes.

How many Law Runes does a Lodestone teleport cost?

There is no longer a simple fixed cost. The current system calculates the cost based on the destination distance and the player's carried weight, with a minimum cost of one Law Rune.

Why do old guides say Lodestone costs 10 or 15 Law Runes?

Those guides were written shortly after the game's launch and describe earlier versions of the fast travel system.

Jagex later changed teleportation costs and reduced them substantially in Update 0.11.2.

Does carrying more weight increase teleport cost?

Yes. Player weight is part of the Lodestone teleport cost calculation.

Where should I build my first Lodestone?

A good first location is near your main base or another location you expect to visit frequently.

Can Lodestones be built anywhere?

No. Certain areas restrict Lodestone construction. Dowdun Reach is a notable example, with only specific areas allowing player-built Lodestones.

Can you teleport from anywhere to a Lodestone?

No. The Lodestone system requires you to interact with a Lodestone to initiate fast travel.

Is Lodestone free?

No. Building the structure requires materials, and every teleport consumes Law Runes.

Are Lodestones worth building?

Yes. Once you begin travelling between distant regions, a well-planned Lodestone network can save significant amounts of time and make exploration, resource gathering and Vault runs much more efficient.

How many Lodestones should I build?

There is no single optimal number. Start with your main base and expand the network as you discover locations that you frequently revisit.

21Best Lodestone strategy

The most efficient Lodestone network is not necessarily the network with the largest number of Lodestones.

Instead, focus on high-value connections.

A strong network might look like:

Main Base

↓

Regional Base

↓

Vault

↓

Resource Area

↓

Law Rune Anima Vent

This approach minimizes unnecessary walking while also giving you reliable access to the resources required to maintain your fast travel network.

For long-term progression, Lodestones are best treated as part of your base-building and resource-management strategy, rather than simply as teleport points.

22Trivia
