Fishing is a skill that released on 21 April 2026 alongside the 0.11.1 update and is Dragonwilds' eleventh skill. While originally meant to be coupled with the release of Dowdun Reach, Jagex had confirmed to hold back on releasing the skill to fine-tune it more with the increased skill cap of 99.
To train this skill, players use fishing tools (such as nets or fishing rods and bait) to catch fish in rivers and lakes. Fish can be used for cooking, crafting, or to just "show off with base trophies". Magic can also be used to interact with the Fishing skill in some way.
To begin training this skill, players must first make their first coarse net and start the Shrimp Catcher quest.

Mechanics
To train this skill, players use a fishing tool with its respective fishing spot. Nets only work on net fishing spots and fishing rods only work on rod fishing spots.
Net Fishing
Stand near a net fishing spot with any net equipped. Use the Trawl action button (default: LMB) to begin to catching fish or junk (like stone or weeds). Each trawl will use 10 stamina.
Unlike rod fishing, trawling only works within the range of a non-depleted fishing spot. Nets can be used in any region, regardless of material, to catch fish.
Attempting to fish in a depleted fishing spot results in a notification that there are no fish here.
Rod Fishing
Unlike with net fishing, casting requires being at least a certain distance away from the fishing spot. Equip a fishing rod (and optional bait) and use the Cast action button (default: LMB) to cast towards the fishing spot. This can be held to charge to cast out farther. Should the casting strength be either too weak or strong, it will miss, using no stamina and no bait. Without bait, the chance to catch junk is more likely.
After successfully casting, wait a moment to get a bite from a fish. It will try to swim away and needs to be tired out (with remaining energy shown in the fish bar above the stamina bar). Immediately use the Strafe Left/Right buttons (default: A/D) to pull the fish in the opposite direction. The fish may change directions; when this happens, the fish bar will turn red and the opposite strafe direction must be used.
Once the fish becomes somewhat tired, the option to reel will appear. To reel in the fish, release the Strafe button and instead hold same button as the Cast action. This depletes the fish bar much more quickly. The fish may resume swimming while being reeled in, at which point the Cast button should be released and Strafe resumed. Repeat until caught. Pressing the wrong buttons will result in the fish escaping once the player runs out of stamina.
For best fishing effectiveness, it is recommended to equip the region-specific fishing rod and accompanying bait:[explain why]

Boosts
All of the following armour and food perks:
- Angler's hat - Provides a 10% chance to not deplete a fishing node when catching a fish - unlocked at 70 Fishing.
- Magic armour - Wearing one piece lowers the stamina regen delay by 50%, increasing how quickly stamina returns when running between fishing nodes.
- Leggings of lightness - Provides 50 additional carry weight.
- Inspiring ring of Fishing - Provides an additional 5% experience gain while worn.
- Knowledgable Nourishment - Provides an additional 10% experience gain while active.
- Skills necklace - Chance to get bonus resources when gathering.
One of the following potion perks:
- Weak Focused Fishing from weak Focused Fishing Potion - Provides an additional 15% experience gain for 300s.
- Lesser Focused Fishing from lesser Focused Fishing Potion - Provides an additional 15% experience gain for 600s.
- Focused Fishing from Focused Fishing Potion - Provides an additional 30% experience gain for 300s.
- Focused Fishing from Super Focused Fishing Potion - Provides an additional 30% experience gain for 600s.

Levelling up Fishing grants access to both passive benefits as well as unlocking spells and other abilities.

- ↑ For all of the fish caught with a fishing rod, the listed XP is the base XP awarded for catching a fish. While reeling, two sets of 3 XP will also be earned, but when casting Fishnado, a base amount of 20 XP is awarded for casting the spell and then XP for each fish pulled out as well. Fishing Frenzy doubles the amount of fish, but has no effect on the XP awarded. This requires further testing, but rain may also double XP awarded, but perhaps only for the fish in Ghornfell. XP boosts will increase all of these sources except for the base amount from Fishnado.
