Templar PvE Guide
articleOverview
The Templar is AION 2's dedicated shield tank. Unlike Gladiator (bruiser/DPS), Templar's primary job is: keep the boss focused on you while reducing incoming damage and protecting the party.
A good Templar must: maintain Enmity, control boss facing, Block attacks, pre-cast defensives, manage MP, use Shield skills without killing uptime, and protect the party when needed. A weak DPS can be carried; a tank who loses the boss can wipe the group.
Strengths
- Excellent survivability (Block, Resistance, Tolerance, shields, defensives)
- Strong Enmity generation on core attacks
- Party protection utility beyond self-mitigation

Vicious Strike Specs (post–Sep 4)
- 3: more damage vs fewer targets (bosses)
- 4: reduces Warding Strike cooldown
- 5: adds Threatening Blow to the chain
Pummel Specs
- 1: lower MP cost — if starved

- 5: adds another chain attack
Punishment Specs
- 3: Skill Speed +30%
- 4: mobile skill — reposition while attacking
- 5: ignores Block/Evasion + guaranteed Crit
Judgment + Shield Smite loop: Shield Smite → Judgment → attack chain → Shield Smite → Judgment. Treat them as one engine, not separate buttons.
Passive Priority
Prioritize Block, HP, Damage Resistance, Damage Tolerance, defensive stability, Enmity, and resource efficiency.
- Ironclad Defense — high-value defensive passive
- Will to Survive (Survival Willpower) — high-value survival passive
- Then HP-related and other defensive passives
Skill Leveling Priority
- 1. Judgment
- 2. Shield Smite
- 3. Punishment
- 4. Vicious Strike
- 5. Pummel
- 6. Warding Strike
- 7. Flash Rampage
- 8. Annihilate
- 9. Defensive and utility skills
Recommended endgame specialization setup

| Pummel / Punishing Strike | 3 + 4 + 5 |
| Punishment | 3 + 4 + 5 |

Stigma Build
Templar Stigmas cover Enmity, mitigation, and emergency survival — not personal DPS.
| Stigma | Priority | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taunt | S | Single-target Taunt — first high-level investment | |
| Shield of Protection | S | Frontal Block mitigation — standard dungeon defense | |
| Punishment | A / Core | Keep Executor uptime in the build | |
| Second Skin | A | +30% PvE Damage Tolerance (10s) at base; stronger at high levels | |
| Nezekan's Shield | Situational | Strong shield (~60% Max HP reported at Lv.20 in KR tests) | |
| Doom Shield | A / Situational | Closest documented defensive stigma to community “Avoiding Strike” | |
| Insulting Roar | Utility | Enmity Boost self-buff — useful on pulls |
Standard dungeon tank
- S: Taunt, Shield of Protection
- A: Punishment, Doom Shield / Second Skin
- Hard bosses: swap in Second Skin or Nezekan's Shield
Tank Rotation
Templar uses a priority system, not a strict DPS script.
- 1. Boss control — Taunt when needed
- 2. Defensives — Warding Strike / Shield of Protection / Second Skin
- 3. Judgment
- 4. Punishment — maintain Executor
- 5. Vicious Strike chain — damage, Enmity, Warding Strike CDR
- 6. Shield Smite — MP + Judgment engine
Single-boss opener
- Taunt → Punishment → Vicious Strike chain → Judgment → Shield Smite → Pummel → Punishing Strike → Judgment → repeat
AoE pull
- AoE threat / Taunt → position pack → Punishment → Vicious Strike chain → Judgment → Shield Smite → AoE skills → re-Taunt as needed
Keep mobs stacked for Sorcerer / Spiritmaster / Gladiator / Ranger AoE.
Beginner rotation
- Taunt → Punishment → Vicious Strike → Judgment → Shield Smite → Pummel → Punishing Strike → Judgment → repeat; Warding Strike for big hits; Defiance for CC
Advanced (post–Sep 4 CDR loop)
- Punishment → Vicious Strike chain → Judgment → Shield Smite → Judgment → Pummel / Punishing Strike (reduce Punishment) → Punishment → Vicious Strike chain (reduce Warding Strike) → defensive window → repeat
Cancel style
Standard KR configuration: Vicious Strike chain → Judgment cancel. Learn this first. A Pummel-heavy sustain variant exists but was considered weaker for max performance in August testing; re-test after September chain buffs.
Defensive layers — do not stack all at once
- Normal damage: Shield of Protection
- Strong boss attack: Warding Strike
- Extreme mechanic: Second Skin / Nezekan's Shield
- CC mechanic: Defiance
Boss positioning
MP management
KR testing reported cancel rotations can starve MP after ~3 minutes. Shield Smite Spec 2 (no cost + 200 MP on hit) is critical. Also use consumables, cut filler, and don't dump skills into dying adds.
Combat Speed
A KR endgame test suggested ~126%+ Combat Speed as a practical Vicious Strike chain benchmark with a 15% battlefield buff. Treat as a testing benchmark, not an official hard cap.
Stats, Stones, Arcana & Gear
| Tier | Stats |
|---|---|
| Primary tank | Block · Damage Resistance · Damage Tolerance · Max HP · Enmity |
| Offensive secondary | Attack · Weapon Damage · Damage Amplification · Accuracy · Critical Hit |
Block is a core defensive stat — not optional. HP matters for EHP and HP-scaling shields, but do not pure-stack HP over Block/Resistance. Damage Tolerance helps unblockable mechanics (see Second Skin). Accuracy supports reliable Enmity once defenses are met.
Magic Stones (main tank)
- Block
- → HP
- → Damage Resistance
- → Accuracy
- → Attack / Damage
Arcana: Block, Damage Resistance, HP, Damage Tolerance, Enmity, Accuracy first. Offensive Arcana only after survival is comfortable.
Weapon + Shield
- Longsword: Weapon Damage → Attack → Accuracy → Damage Boost → defensive options
- Shield: Block → defensive stats → HP → Damage Resistance → tank bonuses
Gear progression
- Early: Weapon + Shield enhancement → Block → HP → Accuracy
- Mid: Block + Damage Resistance + HP + Tolerance + Accuracy
- End: balanced Block / Resistance / Tolerance / HP with enough Accuracy + Attack for threat
Daevanion
- 1. Defensive skill levels
- 2. Block
- 3. HP
- 4. Damage Resistance / Damage Tolerance
- 5. Enmity
- 6. Accuracy
- 7. Attack / Damage
Skill-level node priority: Judgment, Punishment, Shield Smite, Warding Strike, core attack-chain skills.
Common Mistakes & Playstyles
- Too much DPS gear — Templar is a tank first
- Taunt too late — don't wait until DPS already has aggro
- Spinning the boss — party should not chase
- Stacking all defensives — layer cooldowns
- Ignoring MP — rotation can starve
- Ignoring Shield Smite — it is your MP/Judgment engine
- Never using Warding Strike — unused defensives = zero mitigation
Tank vs DPS Templar
- Dungeon / hard PvE: full tank build
- Solo / farm: more offensive or hybrid is fine

TL;DR
Core systems: Judgment + Vicious Strike chain + Shield Smite, with Punishment/Executor windows.
Defense: Warding Strike + Shield of Protection + Second Skin / Nezekan's Shield.
Real DPS metric: boss uptime + Enmity uptime + party survival — not personal parse.
September 4: Vicious Strike reduces Warding Strike; Pummel/Punishing Strike reduces Punishment — the rotation is deliberately interconnected.
