Templar PvE Guide

article

Overview

The Templar is AION 2's dedicated shield tank. Unlike Gladiator (bruiser/DPS), Templar's primary job is: keep the boss focused on you while reducing incoming damage and protecting the party.

September 2026 matter because Templar received a major rework on August 26, then further PvE balance on September 2 and September 4. Pre-September guides should not be copied blindly.
Name note: Will to Survive → Will to Survive (Survival Willpower). Threatening Blow is the Vicious Strike Spec 5 chain finisher (no standalone wiki page). Community “Single-Target Taunt” → Taunt. “AoE Taunt” and “Avoiding Strike” appear in KR community write-ups but have no dedicated EN wiki pages yet — use Taunt + pack tools like Grapple / Insulting Roar, and defensive stigmas such as Doom Shield / Second Skin / Nezekan's Shield as the closest documented options.

A good Templar must: maintain Enmity, control boss facing, Block attacks, pre-cast defensives, manage MP, use Shield skills without killing uptime, and protect the party when needed. A weak DPS can be carried; a tank who loses the boss can wipe the group.

Strengths

  • Excellent survivability (Block, Resistance, Tolerance, shields, defensives)
  • Strong Enmity generation on core attacks
  • Party protection utility beyond self-mitigation

Tanking priority

Survivability > Enmity stability > DPS — do not build Templar like Gladiator.

Current September 2026 Meta

August 26 — major class adjustment

September 2 — attack-chain PvE damage reshuffle

September 4 — current rotation wiring

Modern Templar is interconnected: attack chains feed defensive and Punishment cooldowns. Learn Judgment + Vicious Strike + Shield Smite with Punishment / Executor first.

Vicious Strike Specs (post–Sep 4)

  • 3: more damage vs fewer targets (bosses)
  • 4: reduces Warding Strike cooldown
  • 5: adds Threatening Blow to the chain

Pummel Specs

  • 1: lower MP cost — if starved
  • 2: Punishing Strike restores HP — sustain
  • 3: fewer-target damage — default boss
  • 4: reduces Punishment cooldown
  • 5: adds another chain attack

Punishment Specs

  • 3: Skill Speed +30%

  • 5: ignores Block/Evasion + guaranteed Crit

Judgment + Shield Smite loop: Shield SmiteJudgment → attack chain → Shield SmiteJudgment. Treat them as one engine, not separate buttons.

Passive Priority

Prioritize Block, HP, Damage Resistance, Damage Tolerance, defensive stability, Enmity, and resource efficiency.

Stigma Build

Templar Stigmas cover Enmity, mitigation, and emergency survival — not personal DPS.

Doom ShieldDoom ShieldA / SituationalClosest documented defensive stigma to community “Avoiding Strike”
Insulting RoarInsulting RoarUtilityEnmity Boost self-buff — useful on pulls

Standard dungeon tank

Community guides also list a separate “AoE Taunt” stigma. The current EN database only documents Taunt. For packs, combine Taunt with Grapple, Assault Fury, and Insulting Roar.

Tank Rotation

Templar uses a priority system, not a strict DPS script.

  1. 1. Boss control — Taunt when needed
  2. 2. Defensives — Warding Strike / Shield of Protection / Second Skin
  3. 3. Judgment
  4. 4. Punishment — maintain Executor
  5. 5. Vicious Strike chain — damage, Enmity, Warding Strike CDR
  6. 6. Shield Smite — MP + Judgment engine

Single-boss opener

Establish Enmity before DPS burst. If the boss opens with a killer attack, insert a defensive cooldown early — a dead tank has zero Enmity.

AoE pull

Keep mobs stacked for Sorcerer / Spiritmaster / Gladiator / Ranger AoE.

Beginner rotation

Advanced (post–Sep 4 CDR loop)

Cancel style

Standard KR configuration: Vicious Strike chain → Judgment cancel. Learn this first. A Pummel-heavy sustain variant exists but was considered weaker for max performance in August testing; re-test after September chain buffs.

Defensive layers — do not stack all at once

Boss positioning

Boss faces Templar. Party stays behind / outside frontal cones. Avoid spinning the boss through the party. Use mobile Shield Smite and Punishment Spec 4 to adjust without stopping the rotation.

MP management

KR testing reported cancel rotations can starve MP after ~3 minutes. Shield Smite Spec 2 (no cost + 200 MP on hit) is critical. Also use consumables, cut filler, and don't dump skills into dying adds.

Combat Speed

A KR endgame test suggested ~126%+ Combat Speed as a practical Vicious Strike chain benchmark with a 15% battlefield buff. Treat as a testing benchmark, not an official hard cap.

Stats, Stones, Arcana & Gear

TierStats
Primary tankBlock · Damage Resistance · Damage Tolerance · Max HP · Enmity
Offensive secondaryAttack · Weapon Damage · Damage Amplification · Accuracy · Critical Hit

Block is a core defensive stat — not optional. HP matters for EHP and HP-scaling shields, but do not pure-stack HP over Block/Resistance. Damage Tolerance helps unblockable mechanics (see Second Skin). Accuracy supports reliable Enmity once defenses are met.

Magic Stones (main tank)

  1. Block
  2. → HP
  3. → Damage Resistance
  4. → Accuracy
  5. → Attack / Damage

Arcana: Block, Damage Resistance, HP, Damage Tolerance, Enmity, Accuracy first. Offensive Arcana only after survival is comfortable.

Weapon + Shield

  • Longsword: Weapon Damage → Attack → Accuracy → Damage Boost → defensive options
  • Shield: Block → defensive stats → HP → Damage Resistance → tank bonuses

Gear progression

  • Early: Weapon + Shield enhancement → Block → HP → Accuracy
  • Mid: Block + Damage Resistance + HP + Tolerance + Accuracy
  • End: balanced Block / Resistance / Tolerance / HP with enough Accuracy + Attack for threat

Daevanion

  1. 1. Defensive skill levels
  2. 2. Block
  3. 3. HP
  4. 4. Damage Resistance / Damage Tolerance
  5. 5. Enmity
  6. 6. Accuracy
  7. 7. Attack / Damage

Skill-level node priority: Judgment, Punishment, Shield Smite, Warding Strike, core attack-chain skills.

Publish node priority, not fixed board coordinates — seasonal boards change.

Common Mistakes & Playstyles

  • Too much DPS gear — Templar is a tank first
  • Taunt too late — don't wait until DPS already has aggro
  • Spinning the boss — party should not chase
  • Stacking all defensives — layer cooldowns
  • Ignoring MP — rotation can starve
  • Ignoring Shield Smite — it is your MP/Judgment engine
  • Never using Warding Strike — unused defensives = zero mitigation

Tank vs DPS Templar

  • Dungeon / hard PvE: full tank build
  • Solo / farm: more offensive or hybrid is fine

TL;DR

Core systems: Judgment + Vicious Strike chain + Shield Smite, with Punishment/Executor windows.

Defense: Warding Strike + Shield of Protection + Second Skin / Nezekan's Shield.

Real DPS metric: boss uptime + Enmity uptime + party survival — not personal parse.

September 4: Vicious Strike reduces Warding Strike; Pummel/Punishing Strike reduces Punishment — the rotation is deliberately interconnected.
